How to measure

Measure the outside of the freight as it will be picked up: include the pallet, the packaging, and anything that hangs over the edge. Weight must include the packaging and the pallet itself.

Density does not by itself determine a freight class, and mixed commodities may need separate classification. LaneLion does not assign NMFC numbers.

How the numbers are worked out

Cubic feet = length × width × height ÷ 1,728 (measurements in inches).
Density = total gross pounds ÷ total cubic feet.
Centimetres and kilograms are converted to inches and pounds first, so both unit systems give the same answer.
For several identical handling units we multiply both the volume and the per-unit weight by the quantity, so the count is never applied twice.

About freight class

Density is one input into freight classification, but it does not decide a class on its own, and a shipment with mixed commodities may need more than one classification. LaneLion does not generate NMFC numbers or present an old class chart as an authoritative answer. If you need help, ask us and a person will look at it with you.
